Chicken, Lentil & Veggie Soup

Soup season is officially here! Honestly, I make soup all year round, but my husband doesn’t prefer a hot bowl of soup in the middle of the summer. So for his sake I try to limit my soup making until Fall & Winter – and then I go crazy and make ALL. THE. SOUP. The best part about it is I pretty much always use my trusty Crock Pot for all my soups! I just throw all the ingredients in in the morning, let it cook all day and have an awesome healthy dinner ready by 5! So amazing and convenient. I really love my Crock Pot! But any way, today I want to share one of my favorite healthy soups that I make very often. It’s a chicken, lentil, veggie soup – see the recipe below. It’s based on a recipe that I found online a long time ago and I have tweaked it and added to it over the years. The recipe makes a full crock pot, so if you’re not into leftovers you may want to cut the recipe in half.

Chicken, Lentil & Veggie Soup

  • 1 pound lentils
  • 1 pound boneless skinless chicken (I love to use rotisserie chicken)
  • 1 15 oz can diced tomatoes
  • 3/4 cup corn
  • 3/4 – 1 cup broccoli
  • 3/4 -1 cup sliced carrots
  • 3/4 -1 cup cauliflower
  • 1 onion diced
  • 4 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1 1/2 tsp dried oregano (I sometimes use oregano essential oil instead)
  • 2 tsp chili powder
  • 1 1/2 tsp paprika
  • 2 1/2 tsp cumin
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 4 cups chicken broth
  • 3 1/2 cups water
  • Several scoops bone broth collagen (this gives the soup an awesome healthy kick, it supports and helps boost your immune system!)
  • When ready to serve, top with green onion, cilantro and sour cream if desired!

Fall Essential Oil Diffuser Blends

Fall is upon us and that makes me so stinkin’ happy! The crisp air, colorful leaves, cozy sweaters, pumpkin bread, boots, apple picking… I could go on. Fall is easily my favorite season, and with the changing weather one of my favorite things to do to cozy up my home is to make it smell like Fall! I do this with my favorite essential oils and my gorgeous diffuser.

Here are some of my favorite Fall diffuser blends:

  • 4 drops Thieves & 4 drops Orange. This smells DIVINE and will be benefiting you by boosting your immunities, killing all the yucky bacteria that comes with the cold/flu season, and creating a calm peaceful atmosphere.
  • 3 drops Orange, 2 drops Cinnamon, 2 drops Frankincense. Um YES.
  • 4 drops Thieves & 4 drops Stress Away. Diffuse this for a spicy – warm vanilla scent that will make you want to snuggle up on the couch with a big cup of chamomile tea! (or maybe that’s just me?)
  • 5 drops Clove, 2 drops Orange, 1 drop Cedarwood. Mmm, so warm and cozy.

Fall Diffuser 3

It’s so simple, smells AMAZING, and has so many great health benefits for you and your family! Ditch your candles this year with their artificial fragrances and chemicals and grab some of these truly amazing oils instead!

You can get them here: Essential oils

If you already love diffusing, tell me what your favorite Fall blends are!

Fast, Easy, and Super Healthy Breakfast!

Honestly, some mornings my toddler is so HANGRY he pulls on my leg whining the entire time I’m cooking breakfast and he can hardly shovel it down fast enough….I can’t blame him, he definitely got the low blood sugar and hanger from me lol! Some mornings I really don’t have any time to fix a healthy breakfast before we need to be  out the door for appointments or whatever, but I know how important it is to start the day off with something nutritious. So, when I found this Groatmeal recipe I was ecstatic!!!!!!! Cook it on low in the crock pot all night and wake up to a nutritious & delicious breakfast? YES PLEASE!!

Oat groats are the least processed, healthiest form of oatmeal. I got some on Vitacost (one of my favorite places to shop!) but you can find them at some health food stores and amazon. :)

I found this recipe for over-night groatmeal from theyummylife.com! I made a few changes and it is now one of my favorite breakfasts! It smells like a bakery when you wake up to it in the morning!  :)

INGREDIENTS:

  • 2 cups oat groats
  • 2 tablespoons ground  flaxseed
  • 2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 apples chopped
  • 2 cups milk (dairy or non-dairy)*
  • 4 cups water
  • optional: 2 scoops protein powder (I use unflavored integral collagen)
  • optional sweetener: 1/4 cup honey, organic maple syrup, or a few drops stevia

DIRECTIONS:

Lightly grease crockpot, mix all dry ingredients well and pour into crockpot. Add apple and wet ingredients. Stir to combine, cover, and cook on low for approximately 6-7 hours. (slow cooker times and temperatures vary, so the time may need to be adjusted.)

Detox Essential Oil Baby Bath

Ahhhh to take a bath, better yet a detox bath is so good for you and so relaxing, yet most of us don’t make the time for them. Really, we ALL should be taking them regularly. But todays post is specifically about our sweet babies and how a detox bath can be so helpful and beneficial for them!

My 9 ½ month old baby girl has gone through a lot of health issues in her short little life. (I’ll have to tell her story some time in a later post) So naturally, I’ve searched for all the natural supplements, healthy food, baby massages, sleep tips…you name it, I just wanted to find anything  that would help her and benefit her health.  Many of the things I have found have been very helpful, however, sometimes very pricey. Recently I heard about giving babies detox baths with essential oils and I was intrigued. I looked into it for myself and found how easy, fun, inexpensive and super healthy they really are!

All you need is some good Epsom salt, baking soda, and an essential oil or two. Start filling your bath tub with warm water and then slowly pour 1-2 cups of Epsom salt in mixing with your hand, then add 1/8-1/4 cup of baking soda, again stirring around with your hand. This part is fun because your child can feel the salt and baking soda and help you mix it. Next just put a drop or two of your favorite essential oil, (I like to use a drop each of frankincense and lavender) and voila, you have yourself a detox bath! So easy! And my baby seems to really enjoy them!317925B7-CCEF-4642-9BF9-13C937284941 (1)

Now, I’m sure your thinking “okay, now we know how to create a nice detox bath for our kids….but what’s so great about it?” So let me give you some reasons why these detox baths are so incredibly beneficial!

  1. Helps fight colds/flus! As soon as my daughter shows signs of sickness I give her a detox bath. This helps boost her immune system. The Epsom salt and baking soda also help flush out all the icky toxins that build up in our childrens bodies.
  2. Helps to calm and relax child before bed. The magnesium in the Epsom salt is very calming and can help even the most hyper child calm down and prepare for bed time.
  3. Helps support concentration. The Magnesium helps support brain function and helps children stay focused better and for longer periods of time.
  4. Relieves stress. If your child has gone through a traumatic situation or health issue like mine has or if they are just prone to being more anxious and stressed, these detox baths will really help calm them and help prevent anxiety and irritability.

If you don’t have lavender or frankincense and would like to purchase either of them, the best way to go is getting a youngliving account and buying it wholesale! Check out some account options here! And until Friday the kits are on sale!!!!!! Eeeeeeek! Check out the sale details here along with a breakdown of all the oils in the kit!

Detox baths have definitely become a regular thing around here and we are loving them! Let me know if you and your family enjoy detox baths!

Announcing new Weekly highlight

Hi!

I am extremely excited to announce that Homemaking From Scratch is going to start a weekly highlight post! We will be highlighting a natural product once a week and will cover some essential oils, cooking oils, herbs, etc. We will also be highlighting some dangerous products that are typically used every day in the average American household. It is easy to simply keep using what we are used to and often we don’t realize how harmful these commonly used products are. But we need to STOP!

I am so looking forward to discussing these natural do’s and don’ts with you all! I am so thankful when a friend makes me aware of a natural remedy or informs me that I should stop using something.. It is difficult to stay up to date on all the natural do’s and don’ts on our own. We need community! So stay tuned each week for my friendly highlights! And please leave comments. I would love to know your thoughts and opinions. There is always something to be learned an I’d love any natural knowledge you can throw my way 😉

Also, I did a course on natural living for My Homemaking Mentor an online training academy with awesome courses. This program is an excellent tool for learning more about natural living as well as growing Spiritually. AND I just found out that it is going on sale March 27 – April 3. So be sure to check that out :)

As an added bonus they are offering this free e-course! And it looks awesome.

I will try to get each highlight up by Monday. I am eagerly looking forward to chatting with you each week!

My Home Making Mentor Review. What it’s all about and why it’s a must have for every woman!

A brand new online academy was recently launched called “My Homemaking Mentor.” In a world where mentorship is so important and often hard to find, this program is much needed.

Do you often find yourself wishing you had the time & money to take cooking classes, so that you could better prepare meals for your family and guests? And while you were at it, wish someone would help you learn to better meal plan and budget? Do you want to create a healthier, natural, home but feel overwhelmed by the task of researching natural remedies, finding natural resources that are affordable (i.e. cleaning supplies, herbs, essential oils, etc.), as well as learning how to use these safely and effectively? Maybe you aren’t much of a cleaner or organizer and wish you had someone to come along side you and help refine these skills. Or maybe you simply long to have someone impart wisdom to you on how to better love your husband and improve your marriage or give you tips on how you can become more spiritually disciplined but you are too timid to ask?!

Well…all of this AND MORE is addressed in the new online academy My Home Making Mentor! SERIOUSLY! This mentorship program provides 50+ videos for you to view or listen to in the car or while you are working (I listened to a course while folding laundry. 😉 Several Godly women came together and made courses to help teach and mentor other women in areas they where they feel skilled/knowledgable. What an awesome program, right!? AND it is on SALE this week!

I had the incredible privilege of participating in this academy as one of the mentors and I did a course on “An intro to a natural healthy home.” I was able to share some of my experience with essential oils and natural remedies as well as point out where I buy many of my favorite natural products! One of my favorite courses so far was “100 ways to love your husband” by Lisa Jacobson (blogger at Club 31 Women & author of an awesome marriage book). What an encouraging, God-centered, practical course! Jami Balmet (blogger at Young Wife’s Guide) also did incredible courses on hospitality and spiritual discipline.

I CANNOT say enough good things about these courses! Instead of just taking my word for it, check it out yourself!
